The Baja was a rally-flavoured version of the XLR250R named after the Baja California desert race. Over the standard bike it added an oil cooler, a rear disc brake and a large twin-lens headlight with a bigger tail bag, which made it about 3 kg heavier. Underneath it used the same 249 cc RFVC single and chassis as the MD20-type XLR250R, and Dirt Rider rated the Japan-only XLR highly in a 1989 grey-import test.
